Using a serial port as a virtual USB port?

I bought a Garmin eTrex Legend, and software for 2009 Map of Garmin. The company said the card is compatible with my GPS, but when I try to install it, it seems that USB ports, where my GPS only provided with a serial port plug, which states that there is no GPS connected. Is there some kind of program for the serial ports to detect that USB ports, or if anyone knows about the product of his car, is there any way to download a map, so they are compatible?
