Backcountry Scenic Drives: El Camino Del Diablo Trail
El Camino del Diablo, translated the way of the devil, is one of the longest adventures and 4 wheels remote-in Arizona. Escape from the stress of holiday fun this way out of road obstacles, centuries of history and spectacular desert scenery. Popularly known as The Devil's Highway, this road requires a minimum of two travel days more, if you intend to explore other trails very close.
First used by Indians in 1500 by Spanish missionaries, this trip earned its well deserved reputation as the deadliest roads immigrants during the California Gold Rush in 1849. Gold seekers crossed the deserts of Sonora have lost their way when the road erased quicksand. The passengers died of thirst and exposure to heat. The exact number of deaths along the track are unknown. Anywhere from 400 to 2000 could be buried in unmarked graves along the road, which is commonly believed. Around 50 known tombs are near the road, but only a handful of markers have.
More recently, The road became known as "The road of smugglers," where alcohol smugglers used this route during the days of prohibition. In 1853-54, the Inspectors formalize Mexico and U.S. border populated region. Gold Rushere flooded the road again in the1860s. The movement was weakened when the railroad arrived to Yuma in 1870.
The trail begins today in the town of Wellton, Interstate 8, 25 miles east of Yuma. Finish your gas tank before leaving town. Three distinct sections: Road Trip through M. Barry Goldwater Air Force Range, Cabeza Prieta National Wildlife Refuge and Organ Pipe National Monument. The trip ends in Ajo, a bustling copper mining town.
Leaving Wellton, the road is really nice, wide road and calibrated for most Air Barry M. Goldwater Range Force. Currently, the range of 2 million acres of public land leased to the military. In 1941, the Air Force formed the first world war, the II fighter pilots in air-air and air-ground exercises. Pilot Training Air Force and Marines still on the line today. Some of the sections through range can twist and turn and be weed for larger vehicles.
After 31 miles, the road between Cabeza Prieta National Wildlife Refuge. Some sections of the route more difficult, picturesque and interesting. Sharp eyes will place a great variety of wildlife here too. This section is a single narrow track winding through the mountains of Cabeza Prieta. Likely weed sections with scratches. Low tire pressure necessary through deep sand and fuel mastication in those places. Some rocky sections are also grown. The photographs are endless ways the inside the shelter. The light-colored granite mountains and winding road, and saguaros Ocotillos with their bright colors of flowers color the landscape.
Step 5-mile Pinacate lava flow is the toughest stretch of track. This black ash covered landscape is not difficult to negotiate. It is very uneven and slow. Pinta sands are sand dunes surrounding the lava flow. Las Playas (beaches), east of the Pinta Sands, is an area of deep sand. For wet weather, this area is impractical. This part is also brushiest trip together. Scratches are inevitable for all vehicles.
The last section of the route through the Organ Pipe Cactus National Monument. There is an old farm in Bates Well. The old buildings, huts and pens are fun to explore. Past this point, the road is almost sorted and retrofitted 2WD. The National Monument protects the Organ Pipe Cactus, the cactus of the second largest in the United States.
Voyager Devil's Highway, or El Camino del Diablo Trail requires advanced preparation. This unforgettable trip is easy to plan and navigate the track using the useful wild adventures Guide Arizona. It also deals other special considerations from the elimination this path. For example, traveling in a group is an advantage. Vehicles can share water, food, gas and other supplies. The groups are also less likely came illegally cross the border.
